ChuckleVision is a popular British children's television series, shown on CBBC, first shown in 1987. It follows the adventures of the two Chuckle Brothers; Barry (the smaller), and Paul, the taller one who thinks he is brighter, who find themselves in all sorts of situations that they must cope with. The 19th series started on Monday 5 February on BBC One, with the first episode having a Roman theme.

The basic plot to each show is the brothers undertaking some sort of job, task or adventure. They are often employed by a character known as No Slacking, who is always played by the brothers' real-life half-brother Jimmy Patton. No Slacking is meant to be a different character in every episode he appears in; however, he is always known by this name owing to the catchphrase he always says to get the bumbling brothers to work properly. No Slacking usually appears several times in each series, and in each episode his life is either ruined or otherwise inconvenienced by Paul and Barry.

However, on occasion, the jobs they carry out can be somewhat surreal, or can put them in surreal circumstances. Once they babysat for a boy who got out of his bed, leaving a football on his pillow, leading them to believe that his head had come off; on another occasion they were scheduled to entertain a wealthy family, only to walk into a bedroom and find a rhinocerous- which they accidentally stole.

The duo also often carry out jobs and tasks given to them by "Dan the Van", who is never seen.

Their other half brother Brian Patton (who is a double act with Jimmy, The Patton Brothers) has appeared on and off since 1995. His character can often be heard to say "Get out of it!".

Paul is the dominant of the two; it's often due to his blind confidence that the two end up in bother. When he realises he has made a mistake, he often blames Barry. He also tends to make Barry do the hard work and take the credit. However, by the end, poetic justice is usually done and if either brother is to come out on top at the end of the episode, it will invariably be Barry. However, this war between the brothers only happens in about half the episodes. The classic episodes of the show often ended with the brothers running away from some angered third party they had been trying to help.

Since the 2002 series, during the end credits out-takes and goofs are usually shown.

[edit] Characters

  • Barry: Barry is more sensible than Paul- which is not saying much. Barry is forced to drive the Chuckmobile as Paul is too lazy. In more recent episodes, he makes subtly snide remarks about his brother when he hears him voice a "brilliant" idea, but he always carries it out.
  • Paul: Paul seems to be the De Facto leader of the duo but is not as smart as Barry. He often takes credit for Barry's brilliant actions which often leads him into bother.
  • No Slacking: (played by Jimmy Patton, who is a sibling to the Chuckle Brothers) He is credited as No Slacking because of his trademark line 'and no slacking!'. He often appears in some episodes, often as a man Paul and Barry are working for or who has something to do with them in one way or another.
  • Geroutofit (Very imaginative name) (Get out of it): (played by Brian Patton, who is a sibling to the Chuckle Brothers) He is credited as Geroutofit because of his trademark line 'Geroutofit!'. He often appears in some episodes, but always plays the bad guys- once as an imposter that was not their brother at all.
  • Sir Carrington-Smythe (pronounced smith): A man who appears in the case of the stolen ruby series and later, the magnetic distraction 3-part episode. He is an undercover agent who works for MI12 and later, MI2. He is head of MI7. He helps the Chuckle Brothers get the ruby back from evil villainess Maddie. When he is first introduced, Paul reads his name incorrectly from an invitation.
  • Donald and Dougal McChuckle (also played by Paul and Barry): The Chuckle Brothers' Scottish cousins, always seen in tartan regalia of kilts and tamoshanters.
  • Sir Percy (The Purple Pimple) (played by Barry Killerby): An English aristocrat who doubles up as the mysterious Purple Pimple to continuously thwart the French, during the French Revolution. Married to the French Countess.
  • Robespierre: The French nemesis of The Purple Pimple.
  • The Countess: The French aristocrat imprisoned by Robespierre. Is rescued by and falls in love with Sir Percy.
  • Dan The Van: Is is often referred to in episodes as a man the brothers work for and know well. His face is never seen. Occasionally they will also work for, or receive deliveries from, people with similarly rhyming names such as "Jake the Cake", but Dan is the most recurring.

[edit] Automobiles

The Chuckmobile - The brothers' main mode of transport. A quadricycle with a red and white striped roof. Barry is usually relegated to driving, while Paul puts his feet up on the front bar.

  • Barry/Paul: "Hellooooo"

[edit] Quotes

  • Paul: "The Chuckles never walk away from any job." Barry: "No, we're usually running."
  • Barry: "Let's split up." Paul: "Urgh, no, that'd be messy. I know, you go that way and I'll go this way."
  • [Having disguised themelves as groundsmen at Rotherham F.C. and attempting to mislead their pursuers with fake Irish accents] Paul: "Oh bejeebers, they went that way!"

[edit] Trivia

  • There are often references made to Rotherham United F.C. , whom they support in real life. In one episode Paul plays for Rotherham F.C and scores an own goal.
  • Three early 1990s episodes of the programme were written by future BAFTA-winning television writer Russell T. Davies.
  • The fourteenth series, broadcast in 2002, saw a landmark. It used a continuous serialised storyline, involving the brothers' hunt for a missing ruby.
  • The sixteenth series featured the first time one of the brothers appeared without their famous moustache. This time it was Barry.
  • The fifth series saw the theme tune slightly altered. This theme tune has remained ever since, but was shortened in the seventeenth series.
  • Paul and Barry also had a game show on CBBC entitled To Me, To You, in which children played games for prizes on an artificial desert island. However, the show was not as popular as Paul and Barry's other show, ChuckleVision and was therefore cancelled by the BBC at the turn of the 21st Century.
  • In the episode where Paul and Barry are aircraft pilots, they are guiding a flight to Greasbrough International Airport, Greasbrough being a small village near Rawmarsh and Kimberworth
  • There has only been one video release of the show, entitled 'goofy golfers' featuring 3 epiosdes from the 1991 series.
