Chuck Hunsinger

Chuck Hunsinger, born July 25, 1925 in Harrisburg, Illinois, was a star football running back.

He played with the University of Florida Gator's between 1946 and 1949. He rushed for 2017 yards in his career, with 842 yards in 1948 and 774 yards in 1949. He had two great games in 1949, rushing for 199 yards versus Furman University and 171 against University of Georgia.

He was drafted by the NFL's Chicago Bears in 1950, in the 1st round, third overall, and had a three year career with the Bears, from 1950 to 1952. He played 34 games in all, rushing for 834 yards (his best year was 1951 with 369) and catching 23 passes. He also returned punts and kickoffs.

Hunsinger played 3 years (27 game from 1953 to 1955) with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Unfortunately, he is best (or infamously) remembered for one play in 1954's 42nd Grey Cup. With his Alouettes leading by 5 points in the final minutes of the game, and on the Edmonton Eskimos 10 yard line, Hunsinger surprisingly and unexplainably fumbled the ball. CFL great Jackie Parker recovered it for Edmonton and returned it a record 90 yards for the game winning touchdown. It was one of the greatest plays in Grey Cup history.

Hunsinger returned to his native Illinois and became an engineer.
