Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Here's some tips:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Angela. 02:16, Mar 14, 2004 (UTC)

Angela, thanks for your kind welcome, I was pleased to see you had added Derby's Arboretum to Wikipedia. Being a local historian who operates within a local history and haritage group, I have access to a mountain of research about Derby and Derbyshire, and look forward to sharing this knowledge.

[edit] St. Werburgh's Church

Hey, just thought I'd drop a note since I reconfigured your St. Werburgh's Church. Generally, articles should be written as stand-alone descriptive articles rather than being intimitely tied to images, which instead should be described in the image caption (and usually thumbnailed if they're large). Otherwise great work! --Delirium 11:12, May 3, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Jedidiah Strutt

Chris, I noticed that you'd commented on User talk:81.174.189.42 with some information on Jedidiah Strutt. How about adding your knowledge to the article? It's pretty pitiful right now. Joyous 02:44, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image tags

Thanks for uploading

  • Image:Derbycathedral1.jpg
  • Image:Derbygrammer1.jpg

I notice that they currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Evil MonkeyTalk 04:49, Dec 23, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image:CharlesRolls.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:CharlesRolls.jpg. You labeled it as "under licence from Derby Museum Service". Could you check the list of image copyright tags and make sure that I've labeled it accurately as per the intent of the copyright holder? It would be especially nice to know if it is has been licensed under more generous terms than what it now shows. Thanks! Kbh3rd 16:24, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging

There's a project underway to add copyright tags to images, and a few images you uploaded showed up on the list. Namely:

I assume that they're personal photos, but -- perhaps displaying an excess of caution -- I'm asking you to confirm that, and what tags should be added to them. Thanks! --Calton 01:10, 22 Jan 2005 (UTC)

also Image:Woodywalk.jpg has been tagged for deletion. It has a nasty copyright notice on it and unclear license. Justinc 01:22, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Plagueplaque.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Plagueplaque.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairusein|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Pak21 15:27, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Joseph strutt.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Joseph strutt.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:06, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright Violation

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate your creation of the article, Joseph Strutt of Derby, but we cannot accept copyrighted text borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright problems for more information on this topic, or generally, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Please do not remove the copyright violation notice placed in the article or repost the suspected infringing text. However, if you would like to rewrite the article in your own words, follow the link in the posted notice to create a temporary subpage. If your new article is appropriate, and not a further copyright violation, the reviewing administrator will move that new article into place once the copyright status of the original has been resolved. [edit] Copyright Violation reply

Please accept my apologies, as I am the author of the original article about Joseph Strutt of Derby, I did not realise that I was infringing any copyright, However I now see that I was infringing my own copyright by placing this into Wikipedia. I have now edited it the text so that it is not identical to my original text but retains the historical facts.

I hope this will suffice for the copyright purposes.

Actually, if you place your own text onto Wikipedia and realize that doing so puts it under the GFDL, you violate no copyrights. None. I'm no expert, but I don't think its possible to infringe your own copyrights. The notice on articles just means it is a *possible* copyright violation. As long as you put your text under the GFDL, there is none. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding this may have caused, but I just didn't realize you had put your own text into the article. If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask me; I'll do my best or at least point you in the right direction. Oh, also, please try and sign your messages on talk pages with four tildes (~). Again, I'm sorry for any misunderstandings. --Douglas Whitaker 03:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nice article!

Just to say I liked your article on W. J. Coffee: keep up the good work! Don't hesitate to drop me a line if there's anything I can help with. Happy editing, JackyR | Talk 20:45, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I see you ran into copyright suspicions above. It seems a common problem for professional writers who also contribute to WP!
Btw, for the photos, have you discovered Wikipedia Commons yet? It's the central library for all the Wikimedia projects (German-language Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc). One uploads images there in exactly the same way as to English Wikipedia, and then they can be used by every project. Someone has already transferred Image:Darwin cutout.gif there. Commons:First steps is very helpful, and there's plenty of when you hit "Upload file". Any probs, gissa shout! JackyR | Talk 14:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
