[edit] Gone?

In amongst all these image notices, I'm just wondering if you're gone from the Wiki. It's been a while since you edited, but I also know you're probably starting college at present. Good luck with it all, but when you get a chance please consider returning to add to the project. Harro5 08:44, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Lincoln.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Lincoln.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, contact Carnildo.

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:JFKLBJ.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:JFKLBJ.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

hi -- you tagged this photo as "The copyright holder has irrevocably released all rights to it," which seems incredibly unlikely to me since it's an AP photo. Can you tell us where you got it, and how you know that to be true? Otherwise, there must be plenty of (much better) photos of Gore around. thanks. bikeable (talk) 22:39, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] user page

The article you created at Chris D Jackson is not suitable for a Wikipedia article, which must have a notable subject and be verifiable, but it may be a good start for your own userpage. I have moved it to User:ChrisDJackson, which is where you are encouraged to write about yourself. You are free to move it back into the (Main) namespace but bear in mind that if you do so, it is likely to be nominated for deletion.

The purpose of a user page is to enable active editors of Wikipedia to introduce themselves to other editors. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so you should not consider your user page to be a personal homepage. Content unrelated to Wikipedia or its editing may be removed.

Please see the user page guidelines, especially this section for more information.

Please read WP:AUTO. The recommendation is always: wait until someone else writes a biography about you. -- RHaworth 08:43, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blanking of user page

According to Wikipedia:User page#What can I not have on my user page?, it's inappropriate for a user page to include "[e]xcessive personal information (more than a couple of pages) unrelated to Wikipedia". The bio that Chris provided isn't more than a couple of pages. It's also shorter than what he had on his user page when he was an active contributor. I think it should be restored. JamesMLane t c 12:43, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I disagree. It's written as a third-person biographical encyclopedia article. Sorry to be harsh, but it appears he was using his user space as a location for a vanity biography. — Matt Crypto 12:38, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Some people put their user pages in the third person. This text was userfied from mainspace through AfD. [1] Anyway, I see that, since my comment above, Chris has resumed editing, so I'll wait and see what he wants to do about his user page. Chris, if you want to restore your text, and there's flak, drop me a note and I'll support you. JamesMLane t c 16:18, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Al Gore

Hi ChrisDJackson. In regard to the infobox picture in the Al Gore article, while I completely agree with you that it would be preferable to have a newer picture of Gore in the infobox, Wikipedia policy regarding copyright dictates that images with unknown copyright status should not be used where possible. The image you are placing in the infobox, while a good picture, has unknown copyright status, while the 1994 VP photo is in the public domain and thus free from copyright concerns. Judging from your actions at the Gore article and the large number of messages on your talk page, I highly suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Image use policy. Thanks. · j e r s y k o talk · 04:07, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not certain what the copyright status of the image would be. My best guess is that the image is copyrighted and thus subject to Wikipedia's fair use guideline. This guideline states in part, "Always use a more free alternative if one is available." As there are other photos of Gore available that are not covered under copyright protection (U.S. federal government photographs, for instance, which are all copyright-free), use of the image in the Gore article would likely not comply with Wikipedia's fair use rules. Like I said, I really would like to have a newer picture of Gore in the article's infobox, but we should really try to find one that is either not copyrighted or distributed under a non-restrictive license. · j e r s y k o talk · 16:36, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
To jump in here, there are already several recent photos of Gore further down in the article. They are also free to use, so a fair use photo cannot be used in the article unless it illustrates a rare event in his life that is of notable significance. --tomf688 (talk - email) 17:11, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Larry King1.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Larry King1.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Alsig.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Alsig.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
