[edit] Summary
from en wikipedia.
A portrait, supposedly of Christopher Marlowe, in Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. There is in fact no evidence that the anonymous sitter is Marlowe, but he is the correct age and his swaggering demeanour fits the image of what Marlowe is believed to have been like in person.
The full inscription, of which part is visible in the upper left-hand corner, reads:
- ANNO DÑI ÆTATIS SVÆ 21
- 1585
- QVOD ME NVTRIT
- ME DESTRVIT
Which translates to: "AD 1585, 21 years old. 'That which nourishes me destroys me.'"
