[edit] Grandall Empire

The main empire on the continent and where most of the story revolves around. The empire is under the leadership of the Astlar Dynasty's only heir Strife, after his father died on an unknown war. Its capital is Parousia, a fortress city surrounded by a defensive wall. Lately the Empire has not interfered with the other conflicting reigns, amassing secretly their weapons and armies. The emperor has installed a dictatorship based on fear, which eventually will lead into an insurection.

[edit] Strife Astlar Grandall

  • Weapon: Iron Sword
  • Weapon Name: Ambition, Soul Edge
  • Occupation: Grandall Emperor
  • Setting Job: Sword Master

Receiving the heir of Grandall's throne at a young age, Strife lived under the bad traits of his blood relatives, who threatened to kill him and take his throne. He passed various days without eating or sleeping well, as well as constantly fearing for his life with a dagger in hand, until he started hearing a strange voice coming from deep in Parousia Castle, each time he sat on his throne. When he was able to understand what it said, his personality changed completely. He turned into a ruthless dictator, executing his own relatives and threatening through torture to whoever went against his wishes. He also amassed weapons while standing outside of the war between Dalkia and Halteese. Soon Dalkia declared war against him, and he ordered the Cadet and his/her unit to go to enemy territory and stop Dalkia.

Although he never sent back-up units and left the Cadet's unit on his/her own, he proved to be an excellent tactician by defeating both the Dalkian and Malettan forces. He/she was recognized by the people, and that made Strife immensely jealous of him.

A year after those events, Girardot rebels against his emperor and leads a rebel army against him. Strife made the Cadet the main leader of the Anti-Rebellion force and sent him/her to stop Girardot. Upon his success, Strife comes personally to deliver the fatal blow, after Girardot give his former student a last speech. In this moment Strife reveals he was using the evil Soul Edge.

Things turned against him when the Cadet, upon questioning his belief, challenged him under his/her own rebel group, called Arthias. Despite Strife sending his officers Aeolos, Abelia, and Chester to stop him/her, everyone failed and the Cadet reached the Parousia Castle, where Strife awaited him/her with his Elite Army, "Ressentiment". Though Strife was wielding the Soul Edge, he was finally defeated and killed in the last battle by the Cadet.

He then plotted on taking Demuth's reign during the ensuing chaos. Although he was successful in taking Maletta's throne from Demuth, the Cadet foiled his plans and defeated him in Untide's Castle.

Trying to get revenge from him, he sided with Strife and advised him on how to dispatch of the Cadet. He was the Cadet's last exam to graduate as a soldier, and when the Cadet and his unit were sent from Dalkia to Halteese, he joined them in bringing down the Big Defensive Wall. During the course of the war, Girardot entered in various discussion with his emperor Strife, because he never sent back-up and left their troops to battle on its own. Against all the odds, however, the Cadet proved to be an excellent tactician and leader and is able to bring down both Maletta and Dalkia with only his unit.

A year later, Girardot discovers the state of despair the empire was living under Strife's iron fist dictatorship, and to help the people he gathered a rebel force with those loyal to Grandall, not Strife. Though Strife was smart enough and ordered his best student, the Cadet, against him.

Eventually the Cadet and Girardot meet again in the training grounds, and the Cadet is able to bring him down. In his last breaths, Girardot tried to make him/her realize he/she wasn't in the right side, and that he/she needs to think for who is he/she fighting for. He first led the troops sent to destroy the Welshdat Bridge, only point of connection between Grandall and Dalkia, but once he fails he retreats back to Revless. She returned to protect Dalkia from Abelia's unit. She's successful in fending off the enemy until the Cadet's return. After defeating the Halteese Army, Maletta was recognized as an independent kingdom. Demuth then planned the take of Halteese to expand its territories.

Although he was successful on assaulting Halteese's capital Epistema, his forces are forced back by Grandall's units, lead by the Cadet. He's successful and let Mooncalf take the Royal Family's lives. But she's confronted by Grandall and retreated back.

After being defeated too, Hyle tried to delay the troops and buy time to let Mooncalf reach Demuth. But once he reached the capital Untide, he found Kierkess had discovered her and, through torture, also found out his treason. [edit] Arthias Rebels

After Girardot's demise, the rebels take on a new leader and change their name and banners, reborn as Arthias. This new force continued Girardot's desires, with the Cadet leading them.

[edit] The Cadet

  • Weapon: (Depends on job chosen)
  • Weapon Name: (Depends on weapon chosen)
  • Occupation: Border Garrison Captain, Unit Leader, Anti-Rebellion Force Captain, Arthias Leader.
  • Setting Job: (Depends on what is chosen)

The player in the game. Being a young cadet recently joined in Grandall's Parousia Academy, he/she soon showed great skill and leadership capabilities. He/she graduates after defeating Girardot in training and is assigned to the Border, where he/she foiled a Brigand assault led by Chester. Still, the incident started war against Dalkia, and he/she was selected to defend the capital from its counterattack, and later to march towards Dalkia itself and defeat Queen Aurelia.

The Cadet is also selected to go to Halteese to defend its forces, which were under attack by the Kingdom of Maletta. Eventually the Cadet and his troops march towards Maletta and defeat King Demuth and Chester.

During his/her fights he/she make new friends (like Halteese soldiers Ailian, Leraje and Kanon), defeats multiple times the elite Luna, starting a rivalry, and shows his/her good behaviour and great heart, things hard to find in warfields. He/she kept fighting against Dalkia, Halteese and Maletta enemies and, against all the odds, is able to march into Dalkia and Maletta and bring them down. After this, his/her popularity escalated quickly, which made Strife immensely envious.

A year later, he/she is assigned to confront Girardot's rebellion as the leader of a counter-measure force with Abelia and three of his/her new subordinates: Tina, Yuilin and Luca. He/she is able to overcome Girardot's tactics and finally defeated him in his old training ground. Girardot tried to make the Cadet realize for what he/she is fighting for and what is truly worth fighting for, and after seeing Strife landing the final blow to his/her former master, he/she decided to go against Strife.

The Cadet joins with his/her former unit, members of the late rebellion and even friends from his/her past battles, and the renamed rebellion of "Arthias" marched towards Parousia, defeating every officer who attempted to stop their advance. The Cadet receives from Luna the legendary Soul Calibur, at Girardot's request, and he/she uses it to finally bring down Strife and his evil sword, Soul Edge. After the fight, he/she takes leadership of Grandall and starts rebuilding it to its former beauty.

(On the subject of the cadet's gender, the talk about Chronicles of the Sword characters at Project Soul seems to suggest the cadet is meant to be male, as the cadet is always referred to as a he, also note that the cadet is referred to as male in both Abelia's and Strife's biography, although his/her gender is the player's decision, canon-wise however the cadet is male).

The cadet is a pacifist to a certain level.

Appearance: Chronicle 1 through 20, since it is the Player.

A year later he found out his former friend now lead a rebellion against Strife, and refuses to fight against him. However, his superior officer Aeolos brainwashed him using a fragment of Soul Edge and put him against the Cadet. After being freed from the curse, he joins Arthias against Strife.

  • Weapon Name: Aya & Hongya
  • Occupation: Grandall Soldier, Arthias Member

Some dialogue in the game hints that before joining the army, she was an assassin, and that she may have been an orphan of war. Her aid in the rescue of the Halteese is grudgingly given, though her history with them is unknown. She accompanied the Cadet during the Mantis War battles, and is assigned to another unit once the war is over.

A year later, Riese is another of the soldiers who refuses to follow orders and attack the Arthias, and is brainwashed by a shard of Soul Edge and put against her former officer. After being freed, she joins Arthias against Strife.
