In 2006, Chris took on a starring role in two independent film projects: Waterborne and Intellectual Property. Waterborne is a story about a group of Los Angeles residents who attempt to cope with life after a terrorist attack against their water supply. Waterborne premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival and won the Audience Award. Chris embarked his second project, Intellectual Property, as the leading role and as a producer. Set in the midst of the Cold War, Masterson is Paul, an inventor who goes to great lengths to protect his inventions.

Before Waterborne and Intellectual Property, Chris also starred in the Wayans' Brothers film, Scary Movie 2 where he played "Buddy", a college student who has an uncanny knack for lacking social skills -especially when dealing with girls.
