Christopher is an English name derived from the Ancient Greek name Χριστοφόρος (Christophóros). The name is frequently translated as “Christ-bearer”, although a more literal translation would be “Bearer of the anointed one”. The constituent parts are χρίστος (chrístos) which means literally Anointed One and φέρω (phéro) meaning I carry. The word Christos is generally understood to refer to the person of Jesus Christ, the Judeo-Christian Messiah in the Christian tradition. See the article on Christ for more information.

The truncations Chris, Christo, Christoph, and Christy are also used as names. Nicknames derived from Christopher include Chris, Kit, Kester, Topher.
