Christianity in Vietnam

Christianity is a minority religion in Vietnam. [1] Particlularly Hmong and Hre tribals suffer from persecution of Christians. [2]

Roman Catholicism entered Vietnam when Vietnam belonged to France. France encouraged Catholicism [3]. Vietnam has the fourth-largest Catholic population in Asia, after the Philippines, India and China.[4] There are over five million Catholics in the country which is around 6% of the total population. [5]

There are 26 dioceses including three archdioceses. The Archdioceses are Hanoi, Huê, Thành-Phô Hô Chí Minh. The dioceses are:

In the Vietnam war, the number of members in the protestant Church in Vietnam decreased to about 1200 in 1975. Protestant church in the North decreased in membership to about 1,200 in 1975. Protestants in the early 1980s, mostly located in the Montagnard communities in southern Vietnam's central highlands. [7] Nowadays 50 % of the protestant population are tribal people. [8]
