Chris Vinnicombe

Chris Vinnicombe (born October 20, 1970 in Exeter) is a professional footballer, most recently with Exeter City. He is a product of Exeter's youth system, and made his debut in 1988, showing great promise as a defender, which earned him a £150,000 move to Scottish giants Rangers in 1989. He was also called up to the England Under-21 team, for whom he won 12 caps, in total, some of which were as captain. Vinnicombe won a Scottish Premier Division winners medal in 1991, but over the next few years he found it harder to break into Rangers' very successful side, and in 1994, after 27 games for Rangers, he joined Burnley for £200,000. He spent four years at Burnley, moving on to Wycombe Wanderers in 1998. He was a successful player at Wycombe, making the left-back position his own for six years, and featuring in their remarkable run to the FA Cup semi-finals in 2000/01. The following year he was voted supporters player of the year, but after Wycombe's relegation from Division 2 in 2004, new manager Tony Adams decided to clear out much of the existing team, and Vinnicombe was one of the players to leave. He returned to Devon, joining non-league side Tiverton Town for a year, returning to St James Park in 2005. Since his return he has largely been on the fringes of Exeter's first-team and he was released in May 2006.
Chris Vinnicombe is primarily a left-back, but can play in any defensive position. He is no relation to Luke Vinnicombe, who is also from Exeter and has also been on the books of Exeter City and Tiverton Town.
