Christopher David Hanson (born October 5, 1976) is a National Football League punter for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hanson has been punter for the Jaguars for more than 5 years, but will perhaps be best known for one of the more embarrassing freakish injuries of all time.
After an 0-3 start during the 2003 season, rookie coach Jack Del Rio decided to place a huge tree stump and an ax in the middle of the locker room to illustrate his new mantra, "Keep chopping wood."
Each day, players would take little hunks out of the tree, leaving wood splinters scattered about the locker room. In Week 5, the Jaguars finally won their first game, but the log and ax remained. Later that week, after Hanson and kicker Seth Marler had finished their workout but the rest of the team was still on the practice field, Hanson took a whack at the log. He lost control and hacked a deep, nasty gash in his right, non-kicking, leg. He would have to have emergency surgery to close the gash. The projected recovery period would be four to six weeks, but since the team could not afford to give up a roster spot to carry 2 punters on the roster, the team had to place Hanson on the non-football injury list the day after the accident, and he would not be able to play again that season.
What made this even more bizarre was an incident the previous year when Hanson and then-Jaguars kicker Jaret Holmes were involved in an off-season accident where both sustained injuries due to a fondue pot. [1]
Despite this infamous injury, The Jaguars gave Hanson a raise and a contract extension in the off season, and has been their punter ever since, he has made more than 400 punts in his career, with all but four of them for Jacksonville (The other four were with the Green Bay Packers)
[edit] College career
Chris Hanson attended Marshall University, where he lettered for four years in football as a punter. He finished his career with an average of 39.9 yards per punt.
