these are NOT tumours!!!

  • This issue is currently being debated. See the following for a review:
    Olszewska E, Wagner M, Bernal-Sprekelsen M, Ebmeyer J, Dazert S, Hildmann H, Sudhoff H (2004). "Etiopathogenesis of cholesteatoma". Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol 261 (1): 6-24. PMID 12835944. --Zyryab 14:29, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
  • The above article does not support the view that cholesteatomas are neoplastic. A quote from the conclusion : "Cholesteatoma is a wound-healing process rather than a neoplastic lesion. Research to date does not indicate any genetic instability in cholesteatomas, which is a critical feature of malignant lesions."

Removed from article because it was not referenced and seemed dubious... ~ Gromreaper 02:55, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

==Trivia==
Cholesteatoma was first described by the famous Dublin eye surgeon Sir William Wilde. His son, the writer Oscar Wilde, unfortunately died as a result of a cholesteatoma!!
