Chowta

The Chowta Jain dynasty ruled the Moodabidri region for several centuries. They moved to Moodabidri in the 17th century, where the last Chowta ruler died in 1833.

The ornate Chowta Palace still exists and is occupied by the descendants of the Chowtas. The Chowta queen Abbakka Rani fought the Portuguese army during 1530-1599.
