Cholula hot sauce is a commercial brand of chili-based hot sauce, manufactured in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. Its large round wooden cap makes its packaging unique among commercially-prepared hot sauces.
Cholula sauce blends pequin peppers, red peppers and spices. It is named after the 2,500-year-old city of Cholula, Puebla, the oldest still-inhabited city in Mexico, famous for its disproportionate number of churches (local legend says 365, but the actual figure is closer to 40). The name "Cholula" is derived from the Nahuatl toponym Chollollan, meaning "the place of the retreat."
Cholula is also a popular name for Mexican prostitutes, but this is not believed to have any relation to the sauce.
