In 1991 in Houston, Texas; Robert Earl Davis Jr. aka Dj Screw introduced a new sound He had created: It wouild later be known as Chopped and Screwed. The sound was Slowed-Down Instrumentals/Vocals to fit the relaxed vibe of The Southside of Houston . Later, Dj/Ceo of SwishaHouse Records Michael "5000" Watts did the genre after being asked by a friend to make him a "Screw Tape", A War errupted between Houston's Northside and Southside over who created the genre; Watts aknowledges, though, That it was Dj Screw who invented it and honors his legacy by calling his remixed albums " Screwed and Chopped " ( Dj Screw died in 2000 after overdosing on Promethezyne ). In 2003, Watts and Universal Recording artist/Producer David Banner released a Chopped and Screwed version of Banner's debut " Missippi: The Album" , making Banner the first major Recording Artist to release a Chopped and Screwed Version of his/her album. It has since been used by Three Six Mafia,8Ball and Mjg,and even Non-Southern Artists Twista,Too $hort and Do or Die, with countless others to name. The Chopped in the name comes from the scratches used on these albums and the computerized delays and more.
