Rich Merritt is a gay man who appeared in gay pornographic films using the name Danny Orlis while still on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. He had made four of his eight porn videos by the time he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1995-06-01.[1]

Born in 1967 in Greenville, South Carolina, Merritt grew up in Piedmont, South Carolina, a nearby small country town. At the time, both his parents were employed—his father as a meter reader at Duke Power and his mother was doing secretarial and bookkeeping work at a nearby chemical company. [2]
His family attended a Pentecostal Holiness church until he was 5 years old and then joined an Independent Baptist church with more than 3,000 members. Both denominations are considered fundamentalist, believing in literal interpretation of the Holy Bible.[3]
Merritt attended kindergarten at the Tabernacle Baptist Church and Christian school.[4] In 1973, he began attending Bob Jones Elementary School, located on the campus of Bob Jones University (BSU).[5] His parents, who could not really afford the tuition, wanted him educated at an all-white school.[3] At that time, BSU did not admit black students unless they were married, and had not admitted blacks at all until 1971.[citation needed]
While in the first grade, Merritt's teacher led him in a prayer to be "born again".[6]
When Merritt was nine, his mother carried a baby to full term that died just before or during delivery. His parents named the child Elizabeth and buried her in the local cemetery where their own burial plots had already been purchased. The coming child had been a much-anticipated event by everyone in the family and after her death, his family was never the same. His mother was understandably devastated and cried all the time; his father blamed God for the child's death and became sullen and withdrawn.
After Bob Jones Elementary School, Merritt attended high school at Bob Jones Academy. After completing high school, Merrett was admitted to Bob Jones University in when??
Many of the textbooks for Bob Jones University were obtained from the Bob Jones University Press, which had begun producing its own textbooks in 1974. The books wove BSU's concepts of Christianity throughout the texts, even in mathematics.[7]

During the summer following his freshman year at Bob Jones University, Merritt joined the Marine Reserves and attended boot camp.
