[edit] Quick guide on municipal government ID
Forms of Municipal Government
- Mayor - Council Form: In the mayor and council form of government, the council and mayor are elected from the people. The council, however, is the legislative power and passes local laws. The mayor is the presiding officer of the council and he/she may vote in cases of a tie. He/She may veto measures from the council, but they can override his veto by a 2/3 vote. This is the type of government that Bloomington has.
- Trustee Village: This type has 6 trustees and a village President.
- Commission Form: This form has an elected mayor and 4 commissioners. The duties of city government are divided among these officers.
- Council - Manager Form: The municipality may keep its structure as mayor/council, trustee village, or commission while adopting the manager form. A professionally trained manager is hired by the city to manage the municipality. This is the type of government that Normal, IL has.
- Strong Mayor Form: The mayor gets almost complete executive powers and the council is only legislative. As an example, the mayor does not need legislative approval of any of his appointments.
[edit] Muicipal government removal
Figuring out each municpality's form of local government is a time consuming task because it is not readily stated on each muni's website. If someone could find like a PDF file of a list of all the forms of government that would be great. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 17:52, August 6, 2005 (UTC)
- I've decided to just leave many blank instead of removing it all together. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 18:26, August 6, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Year of incorporation
Is it possible to have an optional field for communities which first incorporated as a village and later reincorporated as a city? This would apply to many of the larger communities in DuPage County, and some in Kane, Will, etc. --JohnDBuell 21:42, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've so far only worked on municipalities in Cook County and have yet to run into such a case (except for possibly Berwyn, Illinois). IMHO the most recent data should probably be in the infobox as the infobox's purpose is for quick reference and the information of previous incorporation should only be mentioned in the body of the article. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 07:17, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Municipality locator template
If you wish to edit the template yourself, it is available on wikimedia commons under the filename of chicagoland.png. I wrote a small description on how I make the images on the talkpage of the image. If you have any questions let me know. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 07:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] One more (optional) field suggestion
Simply put: Elevation - could we add a field for "feet above sea level"/"meters above sea level"? Thanks! --JohnDBuell 23:01, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Inconsequential. All of chicagoland is roughly at the same level. Same with average precipitation, temperature, dew point. This infobox is all for the same geographic area. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 09:14, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Optional
More of these parameters need to be made optional - they are leaving empty boxes or red links in the articles. Rmhermen 03:17, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Removal of lat/long field
I have three reasons for removing the field.
- The original data was wrong. The information for the coords was copied from the main body but using decimal format instead of arcmin/arcsec format.
- Fixing every template without a bot is a laborious process.
- The coordinates for each municipality is listed not only in the top right above the infobox but in the main body so a third time is awfully redundant and an added strain on the server that resolves templates. — oo64eva (Alex) (U | T | C) @ 21:47, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
