[edit] Town or village the primary topic?
Changing the redirect to a disambiguation page broke several incoming links, so I reverted it.
According to WP:DAB there is no need for a disambiguation page with only 2 entries. Chippenham, Wiltshire (the town) and Chippenham, Cambridgeshire (the village) are properly disambiguated at the top of the article. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 14:54, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sub-topics
It is not normal to disambigaute sub-topics of places. Why are
here when they can be read about and linked to for further information at Chippenham, Wiltshire? --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:17, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- I added these while I was disambiguating the incoming links using popups - it saves work. I'm quite happy to remove them now. CarolGray 13:59, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Propose move to Chippenham (disambiguation)
My assessment is that Chippenham, Wiltshire is the primary topic here. Chippenham (disambiguation) can be linked with an {{Otheruses3}} disambiguation template, as is done with most other placenames where one place is much more populous than the others. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:17, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- I just read Carol Gray's edit summary "the incoming links should be fixed FIRST". Since "link fixing" tools like popups only work with disambiguation pages, this makes sense. Carol is doing a great job of fixing them. Please say whether you support or oppose a move that would be done after the links are fixed. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:58, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed more than 40 incoming links to this page in April/May of this year, and of those, only one belonged at Chippenham, Cambridgeshire. I agree Chippenham, Wiltshire should become the primary topic. CarolGray 14:21, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- I've now fixed all the links I think need doing - I don't change "User" or "Talk" pages. I didn't mean to be difficult Hroðulf - perhaps I should have put a message on your talk page before reverting your edit. CarolGray 14:38, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
- No - of course not. You explained yourself in the edit summary and I came to the Talk page. For me that is business as usual at Wikipedia - an efficient, if less personal way to edit, and quite appropriate for a disambiguation page.
- Good news on fixing the links! Thanks. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk)

Personally I feel a search on Chippenham should take you to Chippenham, Wiltshire with a link to a disambiguation at the top. Chippenham is a vast and growing town on a cross-roads of national travel in the UK (M4 London-Cardiff, Rail line London-Cardiff, The fosseway, the road to Poole and so on). This compares to a village. Sorry. AlanD 00:14, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
