[edit] Corrections
I have corrected that CCTV is the "only" tv channel in China. In fact there are many other local channels, although all of them are controlled by the government. But still, CCTV is no doubt the most influential, because it can be viewed in the whole country. --Formulax 09:03 1 Jul 2003 (UTC)
[edit] Changes
Changed censorship. Censored means that CCTV wants to say something but the government won't let it. This isn't quite the relationshipn. Roadrunner
Changed statement on government censorship. There are two types of media in China, official and semi-official. All media is subject to government censorship but the semi-official media are not subject to direct government control.
CCTV is "official" media so they aren't merely subject to government censorship, but rather their editorial and news lines are government determined.
[edit] Media situation
Tried to describe the media situation in China. It's basically something *very* different and rather bizarre to most Westerners. The best analogy is to think of a Fortune 500 company. Now we all know that in a Fortune 500 company, everyone works for the good of the company and all of the divisions of the company work in lock step with each other..... Well actually no..... Sometimes the greatest enemy of division A in a company are the folks at division B.
Think about that, and the Chinese media system should make more sense. If you want to really understand the internal politics of the Communist Party of China, don't start with Karl Marx. Start with Dilbert.

[edit] Update
I've updated the page and tried to be as objective as reasonably possible when discussing a potentially political topic like CCTV-9.
