Talk:ChildLine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From a technical, telecoms point of view, could any information be added about Childline's anomalously short phone number? 86.136.0.228 12:59, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Nothing much to say. The minimum for an STD number requires 8 figures, and 1111 is quickest to dial on a rotary/pulse 'phone. So it was chosen as the quickest (and most memorable) Freefone number. Rapido 14:17, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

The "real" ChildLine number is actually 0800 111 111 (six 1s not 4). However, BT (who donated the number -- it was originally a test number for telephone engineers) also set up an automatic divert so that calls on the shorter 1111 could go through. There is nothing to be gained by dialling the six ones, though -- callers still end up in the same queue. the button

[edit] Free on mobiles

The article says that most mobile phone networks don't charge for phonecalls to ChildLine, but which networks do? J Ditalk 20:20, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

According to their website, it's free from all UK mobile networks. I'll change the article accordingly. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 08:47, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
