Chinnasalem is a panchayat town in Viluppuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Chinnasalem had a population of 19,519. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Chinnasalem has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 78% and female literacy of 60%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Numerous rice mills surrounding areas of Chinnasalem is a major employment source for local people. Also few Starch processing factories producing Sago from tapioca and exporting to other Indian states. Wood Crafts is another attractin of this town. They are exporting their products to other parts of Tamil Nadu and other country. The big weekly market present here is serving to the sorrounding village areas. This big town having nearly 50 modern rice mills and 4 rice bran oil mlls.

In this town, so many matriculations and two government higher secondary scools are located. There are 4 Teacher Training institutions and two B.Ed institutions located in and arround the town. One ladies engineering college is established here namely Idahaya Engineering College for Women.

This town is the mid point, when the travelling is from Chennai to Coimbatore approximately 247 Kms and Salem to Villupuram approx 85 Kms from either side. So that only, this town is well connected by buses from Villupuram, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Chennai and northern region of kerala. And also buses running from from Perambalur, Thiruvannamalai, Trichy, Namakkal, Cuddalore districts. In NH 68, The frequent buses are running from Kallakurichi to Salem city throgh Chinnasalem. Here is the big Railway station going to serve the trains on this route from Mettur, Cuddalore, Salem, Coimbatore, Cochin, Bangalore, Chennai via Chinnasalem very soon at the end of march 2007.
