Chilean American
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chilean Americans are a group of 68,849 people who emigrated from Chile and their descendants. Nearly 14,000 Chilenos live in both Florida and California while thousands more--16,330 live in the New England states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut combined. Of the 857,781 Chilean expats around the globe 13.3% (114,084) live in the United States;[1] there are many other sizeable immigrant communities in Argentina, Sweden, Australia, and other European countries.
Most Chileans emigrated to the United States as political asylees and refugees during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, his régime was installed with the help of a CIA backed coup d'état of democratically elected socialism Salvador Allende which caused many people to flee the country. It is somewhat ironic that many Chileans fled to the United States. This includes Ariel Dorfman who was a member of Allende's cabinet and now teaches at Duke University in North Carolina.
The California cities of Belmont, San Carlos, and Menlo Park were founded by Chilean immigrants and San Francisco's landmark Northbeach neighborhood was previously the Little Santiago neighborhood.
