Childrey

Childrey is a village and civil parish in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire).
It is located 4 miles west of the town Wantage, and was part of the Wantage Rural District, until 1974, and was originally an island in a marsh, relating it to nearby villages of the Hanney, Goosey and Charney. According to the 2001 Census, Childrey has a population of approximately 500.
It has more features than most of the surrounding villages, like a post office with local shop, school, duck pond, Methodist church, Church of England parish church, park,a pub, stables and farm store which will sell xmas trees around christmas. The parish church is of particular note for its association with the Fettiplace family and its fine collection of memorial brasses, one of which is the largest in old Berkshire.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon Cille-rīþ = "spring (watersource) - stream".
