[edit] Overview

EDF2 is a third-person shooter featuring gigantic, sprawling maps and floods of large enemies. Two characters are selectable; a heavy-weapons foot soldier and a jetpack-equipped girl using lighter weaponry. There are 280 weapons between the two, and 71 missions to play through.

[edit] Items

  • Weapons are unlocked throughout the game by picking up Weapon objects dropped by enemies. Every Weapon object picked up will add a random weapon of the character's to the selection, even if the character already has it.
  • Armor pickups increase the character's overall defense. Every Armor pickup increases the character's armor statistic by one point, increasing the amount of damage that can be taken.
  • Health pickups immediately refill some of the character's health. They are available in a single-health item and boxes, which refill even more.

[edit] Enemies

Note: Some of the enemy descriptions may be considered spoilers.

[edit] Ants

Ants come in four varieties:

  • Black Ants are the most common variety. They appear in the first mission, can take little damage, and can deal little damage through close-range biting. They can also attack at longer ranges with projectile acid. Can climb walls.
  • Flying Black Ants are identical to Black Ants, but can fly. When attacked, they can lose their wings and travel on-foot.
  • Red Ants appear later. They are similar to Black Ants, but faster, tougher, and significantly more damaging.
  • Queen Ants are seen in a few missions. Queen Ants are much larger, and have a dangerous, wide, long-range continuous acid attack, and can take large amounts of damage.

[edit] Spiders

Spiders come in two varieties:

  • Spiders appear early in the game, yet can be the most dangerous in large hordes. Spiders can take more damage than ants, and fire web that can slow down the player's movement. Can climb walls and jump.
  • Queen Spiders appear at a few points in the game. Similar to spiders, but much larger and with a more powerful web attack.

[edit] UFOs

UFOs appear early in the game, but have several major variations throughout the campaign:

  • Green UFOs are the first UFO encountered by the player. These UFOs move from place to place a set intervals, and fire small, red, low-power lasers in rapid succession.
  • Red UFOs are hardier versions of Green UFOs with identical movement and attacking behavior.
  • Metallic UFOs are a mirror-coated UFO with no projectile attack. These UFOs are only vulnerable in the central, red location on their body. Firing a weapon at any other part of this UFO results in the players projectile being reflected back at them, making them very dangerous against some weapons (most notably beam or shotgun/spread style weapons). The Metallic UFOs behavior is to locate and follow the player, and then rotate towards and turn their weak point inward, while spreading their reflective surface outward to maximize the chance of stray shots eliminating the player character.
  • Laser UFOs are oblong UFOs more resembling the tops of Metallic Walkers. They are purple/reddish in color, and launch a rapid-fire beam of interconnected laser blasts.
  • Bomber UFOs are variations of the Laser UFOs, but Black/Bluish in color. They launch individual energy bombs and carpet bomb large areas in groups.
  • Small Motherships are large sized UFOs which do not attack the player directly, but drop smaller enemies such as Ants, Spiders and Red and Green UFOs. The Small Motherships will move throughout an area is a circular pattern dropping enemies until destroyed. They are usually protected by a close proximity of smaller UFOs.
  • Motherships are massive UFOs which primarily drop Green and Red UFOs. The Mothership has the following attacks:
    • An Atomic Blast, which levels 2-3 city blocks using large, orange, slow-moving projectiles.
    • A laser attack, which rapidly fires a large number of pink/red laser beams in rapid succession from a ring around the base of the Mothership.
    • An omni-directional laser attack, which causes countless large, orange laser beams to be fired in many directions from varying directions in the surrounding environment.

[edit] Walkers

Walkers come in two varieties -

  • Standard Walkers appear early in the game and have three attacks:
    • A rotating laser gun at the base of the body which fires repeatedly in multiple directions for a short duration.
    • A charge attach, which causes the top four mechanical appendages to glow and fire several large, which projectiles that cause major damage. This attack has the ability to throw the player characters in the air and level buildings.
    • A large mortar attack, which launches a massive white ball of energy from the top of the Walker's body towards it's target. This attack has the ability to throw the player characters in the air and level buildings.
  • Metallic Walkers first appear in Stage 38, and are identified by their towering stature, spider-like appearance, and aggressive attacks. Metallic Walkers have three attacks:
    • A laser beam attack, which is fired when the Walker opens its side vents. This attack sends countless lasers outwards while the Walker's body spins in several directions.
    • A large mortar attack, which launches a massive white ball of energy from the Walker's body towards its target. This attack has the ability to throw the player characters in the air and level buildings.
    • A stomping attack, in which the Walker stomps a single leg repeatedly towards a close-range player. This attack has the ability to throw the player characters in the air and level buildings.

[edit] Centipedes

There are several variations in Centipede length, but each is the same as the other for all intents and purposes.

  • The Centipede is formed of multiple segments, each one being an enemy unto itself which will split off and continue attacking if split from the primary body before dying.

The Centipede has one primary attack, which is a volley of green projectiles fired from each segment on its back. This attack is predictable by the noticeably white highlights along the back of the enemy before firing, but covers a large area when fired.

[edit] Giant Lizards

  • Giant Lizards mostly resemble Godzilla, and come in several colors and sizes, with varying attacks.

[edit] Pill Bugs

  • Pill Bugs are about half the size of a single family home, and have two states: rolled, and unrolled. The Pill Bugs wait in their unrolled state for the player to approach, roll up and then attack the player by rolling towards and attempting to crush them. The Pill Bugs cannot jump, fire projectiles, or otherwise leave the ground unless launched by rapidly rolling into a building.

[edit] Gargantuan Mothership

The Gargantuan Mothership is the home-base of the attacking alien force. This ship covers an entire city map, is protected by two individual energy shields, and is adorned with several hundred weapons that fire atomic blasts, lasers, repeating laser bursts and energy mortars. In addition to the many attacks of the Gargantuan Mothership, this enemy also releases Laser UFOs at regular intervals.

[edit] Miscellaneous

In addition to the aforementioned enemy types, there are several variations for each enemy in the form of amount of health, color, and most notably size. The latter variation appears in the later stages of the game, with medium to giant versions of all major enemies.
