It was named after Joseph Benedict Chifley, Prime Minister of Australia from July 1945 to December 1949.
Chifley is next to the suburbs of Pearce, Phillip, Lyons and Waramanga. It has Melrose Primary school, a local shopping centre and Chifley Neighbourhood Oval located in the suburb.
