Chicagoland Jewish High School (CJHS) is a secondary school located in Morton Grove, Illinois.
CJHS offers a dual curriculum of general studies and Judaic studies. It is affiliated with the Conservative Judaism movement, although its student body includes students from all streams of Judaism. Every day begins at 8:00 A.M. with Shacharit, a Jewish prayer service, followed by breakfast. Classes begin at 9:00 A.M. and end at 4:30 P.M., with optional Minchah services held after school.
Sports: CJHS offers a variety of sports, such as basketball, soccer, track and field, tennis, ultimate frisbee, and others, with more to come in the 2007-2008 school year.
Co-Curriculars: CJHS allots a 42 minute period on Tuesdays and Thursdays, during which activities such as LD Debate, dance, vocal music, jazz band, drama, yearbook, photography, and art take place.
Va'ad: There is a main Va'ad, or committee, called Va'ad Hastudentim (formerly Va'ad Hatalmidim) containing the student president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and representatives of grades who have no members in this Va'ad. There are also many other clubs, such as the Crocheting Club, a fashion club, a biking club, a bowling club, an Israel club, the American Mathematics Competitions Club, the United States Politics Club, the Gender Identity Awareness Club, Interfaith Youth Core, and the Va'ad Tikkun Olam, a charity/social action club. Students are encouraged to start new clubs with the help of a faculty advisor.
Shabbatonim: During selected weekends, the school gathers together for a fun Shabbat full of activities to strengthen the sense of community within the school.
CJHS opened its doors in 2001, welcoming 20 freshmen and 3 sophomores. In the 2005-2006 school year, 94 students attended CJHS, and the number increased to 113 students in the 2006-2007 school year, along with many new faculty members. Due to growth in its student body, CJHS will move from its Morton Grove campus to Deerfield in fall 2007. Groundbreaking for the new location occurred September 10, 2006.
CJHS Basketball team upset ST. Gregory in the third place game of the 2006-2007 Metro Prep Conference Tournament.
CJHS had a wonderful Debate team started in the 2004-2005 school year by Jacob Shapiro. Jacob captained the team until his graduation June 2006. Its current captains are Aaron Magid-Novices and Brian Pogrund-JV. After they graduate in June 2007 they will be replaced by David Weltman-Novice and Isaac Simon-JV. The debate captains have been helped by historian and certified genius Mr. Gross.
