Chester-le-Street is a local government district in County Durham in north-east England. Its council is based in Chester-le-Street. Other places in the district include Great Lumley and Sacriston.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and was a merger of the urban district of Chester-le-Street along with part of Chester-le-Street Rural District. Other parts of the rural district, despite being geographically part of Chester-le-Street were bizarrely transferred to Gateshead and Sunderland.
