Chesapeake Bay Academy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chesapeake Bay Academy (founded in 1989) in Virginia Beach, Virginia is an educational institution that educates and guides students with learning disabilities, including attention disorders (ADHD), dyslexia, and dysgraphia.
It is the only K-12 school licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools for students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Other Health Impairment (OHI) in southeastern Virginia.
In late October 1989, sixty parents were notified that the school their children attended was going to close. At a meeting two days later, a consensus arose that the parents must perpetuate a place for their children to receive the specialized teaching they required. Some parents volunteered to steer the new school, and, under the leadership of Keith Bangel, Chesapeake Bay Academy was founded.
Now into its 16th year as a day school educating students with learning differences and attention disorders, the school has served over 625 families, graduated six classes from the 12th grade, built and occupied a three-story, 50,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art building, achieved Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) accreditation, and launched The Education Center to provide supplemental services to additional families throughout Hampton Roads.
