Cheryl Benard

Cheryl Benard (1953 — ) is a analyst with the RAND Corporation, where she directs the program IMEY, initiative for Middle Eastern Youth. Her study Civil Democratic Islam created a great deal of controversy especially in fundamentalist circles; it recommends supporting Islamic secularists and reformers and is skeptical of the true agenda and inclinations of Islamists. She is a novelist and feminist author on topics including current events, women in nation-building, youth radicalization in the European Diaspora, and secularization pertaining to Islam. Benard received her Ph.D. from the University of Vienna and a B.A. from the American University of Beirut. She is the wife of Zalmay Khalilzad.
