Cherry Creek, Columbus, Ohio

Cherry Creek is a neighborhood on the westside of Columbus, Ohio. It contains the Lincoln Park apartments, and the Westview apartments. It is bounded on the east by Interstate 270, on the north by Sullivant Avenue, on the west by Norton Road, and on the south by Hall Road. It is in the Zip Code 43228. Its official area is West Columbus. Although they are technically two separate neighborhoods, Cherry Creek and Murray Hill are often considered the same neighborhood. They are only separated by Sullivant Avenue, and many people just consider the two together Cherry Creek. This is reflected by the Columbus Police Department grouping the two together as one neighborhood.

Cherry Creek is known for several things. First, the Brandenberry shopping center on the western part of the neighborhood, which includes a grocery store, and several other places. It also has its own church, the Cherry Creek Church of Christ, and its own YMCA, the Hilltop-Cherry Creek YMCA.

It is known for being very diverse, as well as a place for crime. The neighborhood is very even between African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasians. Recent school district statistics had shown the area is 45% white, 26% Hispanic, 24% African-American, and 5% mixed races. School statistics from Stiles Elementary, the school that serves the Cherry Creek-Murray Hill neighborhood, shows that 79% of those in the neighborhood live in poverty.

It has had crime problems, and being just one neighborhood has still had four murders since late 2005. The area is gang territory of the Bloods street gang, and Pavara-13. The Blood set that claims the neighborhood, and trafficks the majority of illegal narcotics in the area, is known as the 614 Hilltop Bloods. This gang has territory all over the west side of Columbus. Pavara-13 is a primarily Mexican, hispanic gang. Not much is known about them, as they tend to be very secretive.

The neighborhood is in Precinct 10 of the Columbus Division of Police. Cherry Creek also is one of the more large neighborhoods in West Columbus, along with others such as Hilltop, Columbus, Ohio and Riverbend. Cherry Creek is a lower-middle class neighborhood. Lots of residents there live in poverty. It is in good position, close to West Broad Street and right next to I-270.

The latest incident to bring attention to the area was a murder in November of 2006. A man was shot during a burglary on November 1st, 2006, and died at the scene.

On September 18th, 2006, the neighborhood made the news yet again when a fight occurred involving 50 people, in which 3 police officers were assaulted and required back-up. The fight was dubbed a "bar brawl" which occurred outside a bar in the northern part of the neighborhood. The same day a house was shot by an unknown gunman, where bullets were later recovered from the scene.
