Cherokee Trail High School is a public secondary-educational institution located in the eastern portion of the city of Aurora, Colorado. It is the sixth high school in the Cherry Creek School District. The school campus is closed to freshmen and sophomores, with limited exceptions, while it is open to juniors and seniors, with conditions and initial permission.

[edit] History of the Institution

Cherokee Trail High School opened its doors in the autumn of 2003. As the biggest school (by ft2) west of the Mississippi River, the school received regional publicity shortly after its founding. The construction of the building facility cost local taxpayers and other stakeholders a cumulative amount of $51 million.

Its mission statement is as follows: "Our actions will ignite the genius and nurture the goodness within us all."

Currently, Cherokee Trail High School has had one Boettcher Scholar, which means at least one of its students are in the top 40 high school students in the state of Colorado.

Cherokee Trail offers a rigorous academic curriculum, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. A wide selection in the areas of performing and visual arts, business/technology, and wellness/fitness are additionally offered. The institution's primary focus is to meet the needs and interests of its students while increasing their achievement and preparing them for the future.

Unique to Cherokee Trail High School are three baccalaureate programs. These academic pathways will allow a student to focus in specific areas while pursuing a high school diploma.

  • The Business/Technology Baccalaureate prepares students for the complex information society of the 21st century via technology, internships and work experiences.
  • The Liberal Arts Baccalaureate includes Advanced Placement courses and will prepare students studying the arts and humanities.
  • The International Baccalaureate is designed for those students who begin the program in the 9th grade by taking pre-IB courses and successfully completing the requirements leading to the prestigious IB program. Students must apply and be accepted in order to participate in the diploma program.

Cherokee Trail has housed the globally lauded International Baccalaureate (IB) program since April 2005 and the pre-International Baccalaureate program since its founding in 2003. Currently, more than 200 students participate in the program. The school will graduate its first IB diploma candidates in May 2007. The valedictorian of the upcoming graduating class is Sam Johnson. She is in the Science Bowl, Student Body President, MESA President, is a Boettcher Scholar, and is involved in Speech and Debate. IB School Code: 002292

Cherokee Trail competes in the 4A Skyline league for sports. Cherokee Trail is also home to Legacy Stadium, the largest school stadium in Colorado. The stadium boasts an advanced artificial grass field, ticket booths, cable broadcasting cameras and A/V equipment, and modern architecture.
