Cheras is best described as a suburb in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. With its lush greenery and friendly locals, it has been voted one of the best suburbs to live in.[verification needed] The suburb covers a large geographic area on the south eastern side of Kuala Lumpur, including its famous recreational garden, "Taman Tasik Permaisuri" with its large lakes and family oriented facilities. Cheras is also adjacent to Ampang to the north and leads to Kajang to the south.

[edit] Sports facilities
Cheras played host to the 1995 SEA games, therefore housing many international standard sports facilities and stadiums, including the Tun Razak Football stadium.
[edit] Transportation
Cheras includes several LRT stations. On the Star LRT Line, the Cempaka station is located in Pandah Indah. Over in Cheras proper, there is the Cheras station that serves on the Putra LRT Kelana Jaya Line. The Tun Razak Rail interchange is also connected to the KLIA through the KLIA Transit, a 20 minute journey. There are also a number of buses that goes through Cheras. Major highways in Cheras include Jalan Cheras, Jalan Cheras-Kajang and Jalan Cheras-Seremban.

Several local shopping centres were established in Cheras with varying success, they include Leisure Mall, Connaught Market Centre (Giant Hypermarket), Carrefour Cheras, Jaya Jusco, UE3 (Uncange Emas), Phoenix Plaza (which opened in 1995 by film star Jackie Chan) and Hero Hyper Marker, located at Taman Tasik Permaisuri. There are many shophouses, street markets and weekend markets all over the Cheras suburban estates.
Cheras is also the home to the longest pasar malam in Malaysia at Taman Connaught.

Cheras is home to the UCSI University-College. It is situated in Taman Connaught. Cheras is also home to a number of private schools, namely Sri Cempaka Cheras, Cempaka International School and Cempaka College situated in Taman Cheras Permata Dua. Cempaka Schools also has another campus in Damansara Heights.
Cempaka Schools is the first notebook school (i.e. students all use a laptop, the Apple MacBook, at school) in Malaysia.

Each Taman (Garden, or housing estate) in Cheras has its own designated hawker center. Food offered in the area include bak kut teh, seafood, assam laksa, "De Mou" and Thai food.
