Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT, 成都理工大学) was founded in 1956 and is located in Chengdu, China. The university was called Chengdu College of Geology before 1993. In May 2001, two other colleges amalgamated with the CDUT. CDUT was one of ministerial key universities under the leadership of the Ministry of Land and Resources before 2000. It is now one of Sichuan Province's key universities.
CDUT is a diverse university with 15 teaching units including 14 colleges. The specialties of CDUT are mainly in science and engineering with programs offered also in economics, liberal arts, management, law, and philosophy. In recognition of CDUT's strength and consequence, two degree programs have been appraised as key specialties at the national level and other 11 at the provincial level. CDUT also has two key laboratories at the national level and other 6 key laboratories at the provincial level and another 35 research institutions. There are 53 degree programs for undergraduate students, 39 master programs, and 16 doctorate programs. In addition, CDUT operates two post-doctoral research stations.
More than 25,000 students are enrolled full-time for the year 2004. The faculty numbers of the university are 2021,including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, 62 doctoral tutors, 126 professors and 261 associate professors. Seventy-two of them have been awarded the State Council Special Allowance. CDUT has 2 positions for Changjiang Special Scholarships.
Since its foundation, CDUT has completed 2200 research projects, of which over 600 have been awarded prizes at the national, provincial, and ministerial levels. Fifteen have received national patents. Since 1992, 26 teaching achievements and 26 textbooks compiled by CDUT staff have been awarded prizes at the national, provincial, or ministerial levels. With faculty encouragement, students individually and in teams participate in scientific research activities and various national and provincial competition activities such as “Challenge Cup” Scientific Production Competition, Enterprise Program Design Competition, Mathematic Model Creating Competition, and Electronic Design Competition. These students and student teams have been awarded 132 national level and 48 provincial or ministerial level prizes.
CDUT has an excellent international reputation for its international cooperative relationships and exchanges with more than 30 universities outside China. More than 2,000 scholars and experts from 40 countries and regions have visited CDUT to conduct research or to lecture. Students from the United States, Australia, Germany, Austria, Korea, Japan and Russia have studied at CDUT in different fields. Over 200 international cooperative research projects have already been completed. In recent years, the university has successfully held several international academic conferences.
The CDUT museum, with more than 60,000 specimens, is one of the largest natural museums in Western China. On display are many world and national class treasures. Among these treasures is the 22 meter long Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis, the world’s longest-necked Jurassic dinosaur. Another is the Chungkingichthys tachuenses, a rare complete fish fossil.
The CDUT library holds 1,350,000 volumes and 14,000 electronic-journals. The university archive is one of the first-grade archives in China’s research institutions and universities, and one of the largest archives in Sichuan Province.
CDUT takes great pride in its 65,000 graduates. Most of them have become experts, senior engineers, technicians, and supervisors in various fields and departments around China.
The CDUT campus is located at the center of Chenghua District of Chengdu City near the Shanghai-Chengdu Freeway. Presently, in addition to the main campus, CDUT has two non-adjacent campuses. With a major campus expansion in progress, the new campus will occupy an area of 1.33 km² around the present main and north campuses. The campus expansion will add a number of residence, teaching, and research facilities.
In order to provide the highest quality education for its students, CDUT is positioned to make itself become one of the best universities in China and a famous university in the world.
National Level Laboratories
National Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation This laboratory is the only national key laboratory in the petroleum industry in China. It is a base for scientific research, experimental research, academic exchange, and high-level personnel training in the petroleum industry. Research orientations: oil and gas reservoir geology and exploitation engineering. Main research tasks: Comprehensive research on oil and gas reservoirs (reservoir geology), Oil/gas-bearing basin dynamics and potential oil/gas resources analysis, Research on the complex petroleum geophysics, Research on potential oil/gas resource and its development strategy.
In recent years the laboratory has completed many research projects at national, ministerial and provincial levels and projects from oil fields. Many important research achievements have been attained in the areas of reservoir geology, comprehensive research on complex oil/gas reservoirs, seismic wave theory of complex oil/gas reservoirs, oil/gas reservoir estimation, complex oil/gas reservoir exploitation geology, and water-bearing oil/gas reservoirs. The achievements have made great economic and social benefits and have been awarded many prizes in national, ministerial, and provincial levels.
National Specialty Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection
The laboratory was established on the basis of the national key specialty of geological engineering. It provides master and doctoral degree programs and runs a postdoctoral research station. The laboratory includes seven research divisions and research centers and nine well equipped testing labs playing a vital role in scientific research and high-level personnel training. Research orientations : Hazard evaluation and prevention, Soil and rock stability research for large engineering projects and environmental impact, Regional stability and ecological and environmental geology, Geological hazard detection and information technology
In the past 10 years the laboratory has been charged with over 300 research projects including many national, ministerial, and provincial level engineering projects. Academic research achievements have been reconized with more than 20 prizes in national, ministerial, and provincial levels--including one First Prize National Advancement in Science and Technology. More than 10 post-doctoral research fellows have studied at CDUT. More than 100 PhD and 300 master degree students have graduated from the laboratory. The laboratory has also obtained two national prizes and 8 provincial and ministerial prizes for Excellent Teaching Achievements. Over 50 academic and text books and nearly 1000 research papers have been published.
