Chempu

Chempu is a beautiful village near Vaikom in Kottayam, Kerala, India. It is about 26 kilometres from Ernakulam, the business capital of Kerala. It lies on the shores of the beautiful Vembanad Lake. It is inhabitated by people of all communities including Christians, Dhewars (Fishermen), Ezhavas, Muslims, and Nairs,.

People from Chempu include the warrior Chempil Arayan, the Archbishop Mar Augustine Kandathil, the writer Chempil John, and the film-actor Mammootty. Notable families from Chempu include the Syrian Jacobite family Cherukothu, the Syrian Catholic family Kandathil, and the Muslim family Kattampallil.

The name Chempu means Copper in the Malayalam language.
