Chelsea Arts Club

The Chelsea Arts Club was established on March 21, 1891 (in Chelsea), as a rival to the older Arts Club in Mayfair, on the instigation of the artist James Abbot McNeill Whistler, who had been a (sometimes controversial) member of the older club.
It is a private members club and has a waiting list for new applicants, who have to be sponsored by current members. It has a membership of 2,400 including artists, poets and writers, photographers and filmmakers. Its premises at 143 Old Church Street, London SW3 include a snooker room, bedrooms, a dining room and a garden.
The Chelsea Arts Club Ball (in fancy dress) was a lively, at times rowdy, event often held in the Albert Hall till the 1980s. Since then, it has been housed more modestly in a tent in the club's garden.
