Checkmate was an intelligently written 1960 television series about a private detective agency set in San Francisco that featured Anthony George, Sebastian Cabot and Doug McClure. Created by Eric Ambler, the program involved the cases of the Checkmate Detective Agency. George and McClure ran the agency, which specialized in preventing crimes before they happened. Cabot portrayed a college professor whom they employed as an advisor. The atmospheric series ran for seventy episodes over two seasons and was an enormous critical favorite because of the intelligence of the scripts and the superb performances.

Gold Key Comics would publish a short-lived (2 issues) comic book based on the series in 1962.
