[edit] Hello
Hi! I was a bit busy these days and could get time to reply to your message only now. Good to know that you are slowly progressing on the path to becoming a wikiholic. ;-)
It is very important to gather a consensus before making any major changes. This actually encourages only verified information to get into wikipedia. And discerning the correct info from rumors and vandalism can indeed be a tiring job.
The Indian Coast Guard page seems to doing quite fine to me. Perhaps you forgot to type the correct case (note that the first letters are all caps) — Wikipedia is case sensitive.
Everything's going fine here in Kochi. (Are you from this part of the world?) Achu mamas doing great work. He has already sent back the Dubai Internet city people who were planning to invest half a million crores in Kochi. And now he's working real hard to get me out of college (and reserve all the colleges in the state for OBCs). Oh well, life goes on.... -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK16:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Happy editing!-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK14:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Assistance
Hi, noticed you were editing Indian Navy articles and wanted you to have Atlantique Incident in your watchlist since a certain biased Pakistani seems keen to remove whatever I have to add to it though I've provided sources. I'm hoping you can aid me in keeping the article free of bias since he is likely to revert any edit of mine and impose his POVs. Tx --Idleguy 06:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blue-water navies
Hey, how are you? I just wanted to let you know that I am in full agreement with you regarding the status of the Spanish Navy. It is not a blue-water navy at all and the people who insist on that label have serious misconceptions. Thank you for your work. I have removed the Spanish from the list of blue navies.UberCryxic 18:56, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah I am fine with adding Spain on the potential blue-water section, as long as Italy is added there as well. I am a little shocked that the Spanish Navy has been regarded so highly in the conversations you guys had. Spain has a good, even great, navy, but to hear some of those people talking you'd think they had the best navy in the world.UberCryxic 14:02, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately I do not know much about the South Korean Navy, but I am aware that their strategic doctrine is undergoing major shifts. In terms of gross tonnage, they don't seem like a potential blue-water navy (one French Triomphant class submarine is larger than South Korea's ENTIRE submarine fleet), so I'd be willing to support you from that angle.UberCryxic 16:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Hey, I'm in the process now of acquiring sources and making a comprehensive case for why the Spanish Navy should not be considered as a blue-water navy. Until then, can you keep a track on Marneus and revert his vandalism if necessary? If he violates 3RR, which he already has, then please report him here. Thank you!UberCryxic 00:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hindi letters in indian air force page
hi chanakya, any particular reason you are deleting the hindi letters from the indian air force page? many iaf aircraft carry the letters and i think it is appropriate to leave them on the page
regards iafguru 13:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- well Hindi is afterall the official language of the National government in India. and as i said before, there are lot of IAF aircraft that carry the hindi words and not sanskrit or malyalam. i think it is appropriate to leave the hindi letters in the page.

[edit] Image:INS Mumbai.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:INS Mumbai.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Indian Navy
I noticed that you recently attempted to list Indian navy at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. Unfortunately the transclusion page you added is currently a redirect to a previous nomination. To fix this problem you need to do the following:
- Go to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Indian Navy. To do this follow the link to the page. As the page is currently a redirect, you will be automatically sent to the old nomination. Near the top left of the page there will be a link back to the redirect - Look for the "(Redirected for ..." line. Following this second link will allow you to access the redirect.
- Edit the redirect to have ===[[Indian Navy]]=== at the top of the page followed by your reason for nominating the article. It is also traditional to include a link to the previous nomination in your reasons. Upon saving the edit the redirect will be replaced by the new nomination.
Good luck with your nomination. --Allen3 talk 17:52, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I have tagged a number of your other images uploads ...
With replaceable fair use. In several cases we already had free images in the articles.
- Image:INS Tabar.jpg (Replaceable fairuse.) (top)
- Image:INS Aditya Indian navy.jpg (Orphanfairuse.) (top)
- Image:ALH Dhruv Helicopter.jpg (We already have better free images of this helicopter - why do we need fairuse ones ?) (top)
- Image:Indian destroyer weapon.gif (Orphanfairuse.) (top)
- Image:Indian-U.S navy Malabar.gif (Orphan'd fair use.) (top)
- Image:TU-142.gif (Replaceable fair use we already have free images of TU-144 see TU-144) (top)
- Image:INS DELHI FARING1.jpg (Replaceable fair use.) (top)
Please read WP:Fairuse before tagging any more images as fairuse. Fairuse should only be used for unique unreproducable images - i.e. paintings, films, statues, and unique historic events i.e. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, etc. By using fair use images where we could possibly could use free images we are discouraging people from producing free images (i.e. why bother? if we can use a fair use image). Megapixie 13:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- You don't understand fair use - please read Wikipedia:Fair use#Policy in particular criteria 1, which states that no free image could be created. All these things, ships, helicopters, etc exist - and thus could be photographed, and thus are replaceable fair use. By removing the fair use images, we encourage people to go out and create free images of the objects. Megapixie 14:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
-
- The first sentence is the most important in this case: "No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information.". The ships / helicopters exist - it's reasonable that someone could take a photo of them - people have already taken photos of some of the other ships. This isn't a guideline. This isn't an essay. This is policy. Megapixie 23:18, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:INS Shankul.gif. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. - Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. Thank-you for your work but know that you have to add a source or reference for every single line you add to that article. It's a very controversial article and lack of sources makes it innacurate. [edit] Indian Navy
Thought I should explain a bit what I meant about reference books being used in the Indian Navy article. I didn't just mean adding links to books mentioned on the internet at the bottom, I meant getting hold of a number of books (the history section could use some more references), and adding info from them. I've recently gotten an article - Russian Ground Forces - to 'A' class by this method. Hope that helps. Cheers from New Zealand!! Buckshot06 09:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Glad you found that helpful. I'm quite happy to help if I can, but here in New Zealand I don't have the Indian Official Histories and so on that you probably can get hold of. Actually one thought - I think orbat.com in some way was reproducing the unpublished Indian Official History for one of the Indo-Pakistani wars. Also, a good example naval article is Axis naval activity in Australian waters where the referencing is very good. Cheers Buckshot06 20:49, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:MARCOS.gif)
Thanks for uploading Image:MARCOS.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

I've given up. I couldnt find any references of such a US Congress report. Like I said earlier, it might be a good idea to search the article's history and see who actually added the information. If it is a registered user, that makes our task easy. By the way, you've been doing a good job on the Indian Navy article. Many editors like Nirav, Saravask, Nichalp and Sundar (to mention a few) are good at copyediting. It might be a wise idea to ping them and request a quick copyedit. A good copyediting can better its chances at GA and FAC. Regards,--thunderboltz(Deepu) 13:10, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Regards to copyright:
- Images found on websites like *.nic.in are copyrighted by the Indian Government under the Indian Copyright Law. The absence of a copyright tag cannot be taken as a cue that the image is in public domain. The United States copyright law contains special provisions, that declare all government material into public domain. However the Indian copyright law lacks any such clause. However, these info and images can be used after 60 years since the day of publishing, as by then the copyright would have expired.
- Copyrighted images (such as those from NIC sites) can be allowed restrictively on wikipedia if they satisfy some of these fair use criteria. See if any of your images fit into these.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 10:11, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Indian Navy
Hi, Chanakya. I'll be glad to give a full copyedit on Saturday. Also, I hope you noticed how the military section was merged into the new "Military and foreign affairs" section, similar to how other FA country articles like Australia do it. It was also moved up towards the top. Thanks. Saravask 04:25, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- Chanakya, I disagree. No other country FA on Wikipedia (Australia, Pakistan, Belgium, Bangladesh, South Africa, Canada, etc.) chunks out a section just for the military. Having a "foreign relations and the military" section like that in the Australia or Canada articles is a good compromise. If you still disagree, feel free to raise the issue at Talk:India. But I suspect that, based on comments by Nichalp, Blnguyen, Fowler, etc., consensus will come down against a specific military section. You should still seek inputs from them on Indian Navy, though. [edit] =Regarding improving India article
Thanks for your suggestions.
I have already created image for demographic section.(It has a theme of unity in diversity with religious and linguistic pie charts). Will upload soon.
I have following idea for cultural section. Hinduism,Sikhism,Jainism,Buddhism(Religions which originated in India) symbols along with symbol of yoga. I am just fine tuning my ideas.
I am just thinking Siachen,Kerala,Tar Desert,Chirapunjee or Meghalaya photo gallery which shows various geographical terrains of India(Pictures has to be same size and should come as stripe) for geography section. I am just trying to locate non copy righted pictures. Please offer your ideas and give me if you can get copyrighted pictures. --Indianstar 15:48, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I modified Indian political parties image pixel size as 800 and it seems to be looking better.(Actual size is 863x135.so keeping 863 will show letters without distortion. You can try it by seeing it in preview window after modifying value as 863)See and give your feedback.Once you give feedback,i will make letters as bold for better characters viewing. --Indianstar 16:14, 2 January 2007 (UTC).
I have added chart for demographic section of India article and it can be found here.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:UnityinDiversity.JPG. Pl review and give your feedback.
Regarding Indian political parties image, I am able to view perfectly in 14 and 15" monitors if I keep computer resolution as 1024*768.(To view image your computer resolution in control panel has to be anything above 800.No need to scroll).Scrolling may be necessary if control panel resolution settings is equal to or above 800.See it and give feedback. Also there is a procedure like grand canyon picture in Grand Canyon article,if we do it like that then scroll bar will appear automatically and it will not cause any disruption to the article. I will also think how I can modify the same to suit all computer settings.--Indianstar 16:53, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Pl confirm whether below image causes any problem.
I hope you will get the image with scroll bar under image and it should not cause any problem to the article in any monitor. I am also thinking how I can reduce width of total image without making font size very smaller.--Indianstar 17:13, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removing influences from India main article
Dear Chanakyathegreat, I just like your name and your support for the lead paragraph! It is good to see that an Indic view - factually correct - devoid of ultra-nationalism has been agreed upon, with your support. Many many many thanks!! Yes we have to present a positive picture of India by presenting facts in a well-written & befitting manner. Thanks for the support again! Himalayanashoka 16:34, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
hm, I don't understand your edit. If your point is just that British India was "foreign occupation", just insert a link to colonialism, military occupation or irredentism, don't blank the entire sentence referring to the period altogether. I am not reverting you because I disagree with your characterization of "occupation", but because you are replacing a perfectly valid statement with a less informative but more biased one. You clearly need to learn to make your point on a talkpage first, request input, and seek for a consensus for a rephrasing that takes into account your point without throwing out the child with the bathwater. dab (𒁳) 16:51, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- Hi Dbachmann, I disagree with your stmnt that it is biased. In fact the earlier stmnt was biased because the user simply refuses to remove GB influences from his sneaky insertions & local perceptions without an appreciation of how things evolved. The user simply fails to understand that India's history & unchanged culture stretches back continuously 4000yrs and is well documented. No one writes in the Germany page lead, in any poetic way, that this was a country with a democratically elected govt which murdered 6 million Jews, or the main country responsible for both WW (I myself would not do that even though its an acceptable fact). Tell me something would you like to see such a writing on the Germany page. In a similar way, we do not want to see any British influenced/dominant stmnt in the India page. But we are not presenting any factually wrong stmnts. Its an article related to India and the British may have a passing reference, not as if they setup India one fine night in the middle of August1947. The British are a tiny 100 yr chapter in a continuous resilient 4000 yrs majestically galloping Indian history. This has to reflect in our main article.

[edit] Indic View
I am not in support of an Indian view or a British view, but for the truth. When they call an occupation as governance, it cannot be tolerated. It's not only a big blatant lie but they themselves are comitting a crime by supporting a henious brutal regime. Chanakyathegreat 16:41, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Chanakyathegreat, I fully and completely agree with you on the views and presenting the truth. When I say Indic view I mean it coupled against another view (GB, PT, FR etc) not in isolation. Neither do I like to present anything factually wrong nor ultra-nationalistic, but there is a way to write and to explain it logically so that the writing stays. I think your logical explanation stepped in perfect time and maybe I got carried away happily! Historically, half the time Indians have been fooled because of interpretations (writing or verbal) perpetrated by foreigners.
- But I must also explicitly write that I do not like the words 'British', 'UK' popping up so frequently as if India was setup by them. They are a tiny 100 yr chapter in a continuous resilient 4000 yrs majestically galloping Indian history. This also has to reflect somehow in our main article.
- I will now seek your guidance and support from time to time. And yes it is for the truth presented in a befitting manner for the India article.

- Fowler has agreed in talk page for using word Colonization which in my opinion communicates more or less same meaning!!. Do you have any reservations for using word colonization? CIA fact book and other encyclopedias talk about foreign incursions for 1200 years. There were intermittent attacks against India for another 1200 years (before foreign incursions) starting from Alexander... Is it OK to modify the sentence as inspite of many foreign incursions(same word as used in CIA fact book) and attacks by foreign forces for 2400 years,India was able to maintain its culture......blah..blah..--Indianstar 14:02, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Rewording
Hi, Please see the Talk:India#Occupation for new suggested re-wording. However, please also read the section about usage of the word "occupation" before you reply. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 17:56, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Please do not upload images in the GIF format
Hello and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you've uploaded a number of images in the GIF format. In the future, please save GIF images in the PNG format before converting (see Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload). PNG images almost always have a smaller file size, which decreases the amount of time they take to load. There are a bunch of other advantages to the PNG format such as lossless compression that you can read about on its Wikipedia article. ---Remember the dot 19:38, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Arjun tank.GIF
Thanks for uploading Image:Arjun tank.GIF. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECU≈talk 00:16, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Yea, thanks for the heads up. A pakistani editor introduced those edits almost a month back and now I've reverted to a previous version to remove those jingoistic comments. Idleguy 16:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Power categorisation
No influential admin is supporting my view on the lead of India and the inclusion of great power and emerging superpower. And on that page, if Nichalp, Fowler, Blacksun and Dab do not agree with you, then you have no chance of getting what you want. Interestingly, none of the other pages have a problem with the term. Great power is mentioned in the lead of every other country that fits, including Italy and FA Germany. China describes itself as an emerging superpower and the United States as a superpower. India is the only page that does not describe itself as such in the lead. From my discussion, it seemed like the people I were discussion with were not familiar with the term (per Blacksun's major power comment) and perhaps disliked it because they didn't think it was encyclopaedic enough since they hadn't heard of it. [edit] History section of India article
Can you please validate current contents of History section and verify whether it has any text which is objectionable? F & F wants to revert to original text of Nichalp... Also please suggest how we can shorten that section to bring down article size.--Indianstar 17:47, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Indian navy.gif)
Thanks for uploading Image:Indian navy.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use.
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Could you check some statements
I'm not fluent with Indian military history, but the statements in cavalry tactics#War elephants about regiments of thousands of war elephants are a bit suspicious in my opinion because I couldn't find any recorded battle where so many elephants clashed. Would be nice if you could help. Wandalstouring 01:53, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] shaNo varuNa
I think shaNo is a single word, probably having its origin in Vedic Sanskrit (most probably from the Rig Veda). Vedic words are difficult to justify in classical sanskrit, so I am unable to do further research on this. Since the navy page also mentions this as a single word, I think you may take it as it is. Thanks for seeking my help. Kris (talk) 17:42, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 4th generation jet fighter
Hey,
You might want to have a look at 4th generation jet fighter and Talk:4th generation jet fighter. I was wondering if Pakistan has any involvement in the development of the J-10 because User:Faraz had listed the J-10 as joint Sino-Pak aircraft. Also, is HAL Tejas a 4 or 4+ generation aircraft? I don't know much about these aircraft and was wondering if you could help me out. Thanks --Incman|वार्ता 16:55, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] India Demographics
Because of India's rich diversity, no one image can represent all of India's one billion people. That is why I propose selecting a new demographics image every three months. This would allow for a regional balance and would show India as a whole. Many people have agreed that this is the only way to represent India's rich and varied diversity. Since you have voted for a change in the demographics section, I wanted to update you on this proposal. I would love to hear your comments on talk:India. Thanks so much. Have a great day!
