Did he prefer his whip over a gun, or was he not authorized for firearms? (Were there other Chinese on the force who were conventionally armed?)

In the case of Charlie Chan, "Chinese-Hawaiian" suggests mixed racial genetics, but Apana sounds like either he was solely Chinese-descended or his mixed genetic ancestry is being glossed over. Do we know?

I've made a short leap by inferring that he fluent in three languages, but literate only in Hawaiian; confirmation is needed IMO.
