Chautauqua Cinema

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chautauqua Cinema is located on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution in western NY of United States of America. The 110-year-old Higgins Memorial Hall was used by the Institution as a meeting place and performance hall, including some film showings, until it was converted into a movie theater by the Schmidt family in 1956.

The Chautauqua Cinema has a single screen and seats approximately 350 people. The cinema shows at least four different films per week and nearly 50 films altogether during an 11-week summer season that runs from the week before the opening of the Chautauqua season in June through Labor Day. The films shown are a select program, often including independent, foreign, and documentary films that its clientele might not have an opportunity to see in their hometowns. The Chautauqua Cinema is closed during the off-season.
