Chattanooga Central High School was opened in 1907. It was one of Chattanooga's first public high schools. Its students came from all over the Hamilton County area and the school was highly acclaimed. During the seventies, the high school was relocated onto Highway 58 in Harrison, Tennessee.

The school athletics teams originally went by the name Purple Warriors. During an exceptionally good year a local sportswriter began to opine that they often "pounded" their opponents, the name stuck. The "Purple Pounders" is the current moniker often portrayed by a hammer and anvil.

Chattanooga Central High School boasts a wide selection of the county's top-performing students. Almost all students participate in some sort of extra-curricular activity including: football, mock trial, tennis, baseball, and many other activities. Its students hold true to a pride and time-honored tradition of loving Central High. Central High School welcomes a diverse student-body. Central High School is being run like a private school. Academies are NOT good for all students. The academies limit ALL choices for students, not letting students take AP courses because they are in a different academy is not letting the student achieve to their highest ability. As a former student I believe that the academies are a horrible idea. ALSO the freshman academy is not separating the girls and boys!!! How can we as people learn to live together if we are separated from each other. A horrible treachery is being made a Central High School. It is not the wonderful place it said before I wrote this in here. The county administration seems to be doing everything it can to keep Central from being a good school. Not fixing the gray water in the ROTC room, letting a half a million dollar GIFT from Toby McKenzie slip away because they sat on there butts about it, letting the pot holes go unfixed and remodeling the bathrooms that property taxes were raised for not be fixed yet!!!!!

Central prides itself in striving for excellence in everyway possible. It pushes to leave no child left behind. Central demands of all its students success in every field of study. Central does not demand students to succeed. Most of the teachers could careless what happened to the students.

Central High School is currently under the leadership of Robert Sharpe. Its football team, the Purple Pounders, is one of the many teams in the area. Central is also proud of its faculty and it's nationally recognized teaching staff.
