Chatham (horse)

Chatham was an Australian thoroughbred racehorse bred at the Kia Ora Stud in 1929 near Sydney. He is simply one of the greatest milers to race in Australia, winning 12 out of 21 times at that distance, and carrying prohibitive weights.

In addition to efforts over a mile, he had an incredible record, winning the Cox Plate twice and the Craven Plate three times. In the first Cox Plate, he beat the immortal Phar Lap into second place. He is especially well known for winning the Doncaster Handicap in 1934 with a weight of 10st 4, having missed the start, and on a heavy track. This win alone stamped him for the great miler he was.

All in all, Chatham is one of the greats in the inter-war period, along with Phar Lap. In 2005 he was deservedly inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
