Charwelton

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charwelton is a village and civil parish in the Daventry district of Northamptonshire, England. It had a population of 185 at the 2001 census.

Charwelton lies where the A361 road crosses the infant River Cherwell a few miles south-west of Daventry. Near Charwelton, there is Charwelton BT Tower.

The village once had a station on the former Great Central Railway, opened in March 1899. The station closed in March 1963, the line itself in September 1966. Just to the south were Charwelton Watertroughs, while to the north was Catesby Tunnel, 2,997 yards in length, about 1.7 miles (2.74 km). The station was also the terminus of an industrial railway that transported ironstone from quarries at nearby Hellidon, to the main line.

The parish church is located about a mile south and east of the village (at grid reference SP545555). Around it is the hamlet of Church Charwelton.
