Charly Musonda
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charly Musonda (born August 22, 1969 in Mufulira) is a retired Zambian professional football player. He used to play as midfielder. He has played 48 times for his country.
Musonda started playing football in his hometown, at Mufulira Wanderers. In 1986, Musonda moved to Belgium and started playing for Cercle Brugge. He would stay there for only one season, moving to Anderlecht. There, he would, despite his young age, manage to become one of the key players of the team. In his first two seasons at Anderlecht, Musonda would twice win the Belgian Cup. In 1991, Musonda would also win the Belgian First division title. From then on, Musonda started to become rather unsure of his place in the first team, but he decided to stay at Anderlecht. Only in the 1996-1997 season, Musonda was loaned to Sacramento Scorpions.
In 1997, Charly Musonda would eventually leave Anderlecht and move to Energie Cottbus in the German Second division. It all wouldn't matter much anymore for Charly Musonda, who had to put an end to his career in 1998 due to injury. Musonda only was 29 at that moment.
Charly Musonda returned to Anderlecht to become a youth coach and kit manager for the first team.
[edit] Trivia
- In 1993, Musonda was called-up by his national coach Godfrey Chitalu for the 1994 World Cup qualification match against Senegal. Anderlecht's team manager, Michel Verschueren, asked Musonda to refuse the invitation and to play for Anderlecht, which Musonda did. On its way to Senegal, the plane carrying the Zambian team crashed after the second fueling stop in Libreville, Gabon. No passengers survived the crash.
