Charlotte Route 4
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charlotte Route 4 is a 360-degree loop of primary roads in Charlotte North Carolina; the route forms a belt with a five mile radius around Charlotte's Uptown. The route was created not by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, but by the city of Charlotte in the 1970s early 1980s [1] to help visitors navigate the city's "hub-and-spokes" pattern and frequent road name changes.[citation needed] Since Charlotte 4 is not a North Carolina State Highway and is located entirely within the city limits, it is maintained by Charlotte's city government. Currently, Route 4 is the only Charlotte route in existence. The route serves a purpose similar to the colored belts surrounding Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The shields for Charlotte Route 4 utilize the same pentagon shape used on county route shields. The shields have white text printed on a green background. The word "Charlotte" appears in small print on the shield, as does the city's crown logo above a large number "4".
