- The minor league baseball Charlotte Hornets, a team that was based in Charlotte, North Carolina for over 70 years (1901-1973).
- Charlotte Hornets (WFL) a defunct World Football League team (1974-1975).
The nickname "Hornets" for Charlotte teams is historically based in the American Revolution, during which the British General Cornwallis referred to American resistance in the vicinity as a "hornet's nest". The name stuck as a nickname for the city itself.
