Charleston and Savannah Railway

The Charleston and Savannah Railway was originally chartered in 1854 as the Charleston and Savannah Railroad. It ran a 120 mile line from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA. During the civil war, General Sherman's forces completely decimated the line. It was reorganized in 1866 as the Savannah and Charleston Railroad but did not complete repairs and reopen for traffic until 1869-70. In 1873 it defaulted on a loan and ended up in bankruptcy. It was then sold to Henry B. Plant and the railroad's name was changed to the Charleston and Savannah Railway and was part of the Plant System of railroads.

Later, the Plant company was sold to ACL (Atlantic Coast Line Railroad) which later became SCL (Seaboard Coast Line). By the early 1980s, apparently all use of former C&S Railroad tracks and right of ways had been abandoned, before the SCL merger with Chessie into the CSX Railroad.[1]
