Charles Linden (February 4, 1968 – Present) British anxiety disorder specialist and author. Studied and eveloped a method for reduction of inappropriate anxiety in humans based on continuing research and trials conducted with sufferers of anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, agoraphobia and social phobia. An anxiety disorder sufferer himself experiencing agoraphobia, depersonalization, derealization, panic attacks, obsessions and phobias, Charles researched the field exhaustively before developing his own treatment methodology.

Author of a number of resources including The Linden Method – For anxiety, panic attacks and phobias and a number of DVD programmes on the subject. Charles’ theories of behavior modification techniques, primarily operant conditioning, have been widely used in order to eliminate the subconscious anxious habit which drives anxiety disorders.

Linden was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. He attended the University of Wolverhamptom where he gained a BA in visual media. After graduation he spent a number of years working in television as a director/producer whilst working nights on his research and writing.

Having researched and developed his theories regarding the successful elimination of anxiety conditions, he made a career decision to continue research and development of his theories. In 1999 Linden opened the first Linden Centre and dedicated his time to providing learning resources to sufferers of anxiety disorders from all over the world. Charles now has Linden Centres in Idaho USA, Heidelberg Germany, Mallorca Spain and Kidderminster in the UK.

Charles’ anxiety life coaching centers and staff now provide support and advice exclusively for sufferers in English, French, German and Spanish.

[edit] Anxiety Disorders

Charles Linden’s theories about the development, perpetuation and elimination of anxiety conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder are centred around the development of subconscious anxious habits through modification of behaviors due to external stressors such as bereavement, works stress, money worries or health issues for example. Linden believes that anxiety disorders form as the result of an adjustment in the genetically predetermined anxiety levels in the limbic system, more specifically the Amygdala, which is responsible for the storage and activation of the anxiety reaction. The anxiety reaction is preset to deliver appropriate reactions in the event of exposure to real or perceived danger which is commonly referred to as the flight or fight response, but when anxiety levels become artificially raised by constant or repeated stressors, this reaction can become inappropriately intense, causing a wide range of intense bodily symptoms and catastrophic thought patterns. Over time, as new neural pathways build to cement these new, intensified anxiety reactions into the subconscious mind, anxiety disorders form which can only be eliminated by reversing the process of learning which caused them.

Linden does not believe in medicinal or psychotherapeutic as isolated anxiety elimination techniques; his research and evidence based on thousands of test subjects and clients has shown that anxiety disorders can be successfully and completely eliminated using the correct combination of behavioral techniques. Anxiety disorders are not caused by chemical imbalances, they can cause them, but they are not caused by them; therefore, chemical solutions in the form of drug therapy are unsuccessful at creating a curative solution. Psychotherapeutic techniques available through local practitioners provide ‘talking therapy’ for sufferers, however, Linden believes that they fall short of providing the level of support, accessibility and structure required by a recovering anxiety disorder sufferer in order to make a complete and lasting recovery.
