Charles Jaffe

Charles Jaffé (Jaffe) (born March 1883, Dubrovna, Belarus – died 12 July 1941, USA) an American chess master.

Jaffé was born in a small town Dubrovna, in the government of Mohilev, Belarus (then Russian Empire). He moved to America in 1896 and worked as a silk-mill merchant until he became a professional chess player in 1910.

In 1904, he took 7th in Saint Louis (Frank James Marshall won). In 1909, he took 3rd in Bath Beach, NY (Herbert Rosenfeld won). In 1910, he took 3rd in New York (Marshall won). In 1911, he tied for 3rd-4th in New York (Marshall won). In 1911, he tied for 23-26th in Carlsbad (Richard Teichmann won). In 1913, he took 3rd in New York (José Raúl Capablanca won). In 1913, he took 6th in Havana (Marshall won). In 1913, he took 4th in New York (Quadrangular; Marshall won). In 1914, he tied for 8-10th in New York (Edward Lasker won).

In 1915, Jaffe won in Utica. In 1918, he tied for 3rd-5th in Rye Beach, NY (Abraham Kupchik won). In 1918, he tied for 1st-2nd with Boris Kostić in New York. In 1919, he took 2nd, behind Kupchik, in Troy (Quadrangular). In 1920, he took 3rd in New York (Oscar Chajes won). In 1920, he took 2nd, behind Marshall, in Atlantic City. In 1921, he took 3rd in New York (Quadrangular). In 1921, he took 3rd in Atlantic City (David Janowski won). In 1922, he took 2nd, behind Ed Lasker, in New York. In 1925, he took 3rd in Cedar Point, OH (Kupchik won). In 1926, he tied for 4-5th in Chicago (Marshall won). In 1926, he took 2nd, behind Kupchik, in New York (Quadrangular). In 1939, he took 12th in New York (American Chess Federation Championship; Reuben Fine won).

Jaffe played several matches in New York City. In 1909, he lost to Marshall (+2 –4 =3). In 1913, he lost to Capablanca (+0 –2 =1), and won against Chajes and Jacques Mieses. In 1916 and 1918, he lost to Janowski (+4 –5 =4) and (+4 –10 =4), respectively.
