Charlene Ellis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charlene Ellis was a young British woman, born in 1984, who was murdered on January 2, 2003, along with Letisha Shakespeare, in a botched gangland shooting.

In what has become known as the New Year Murders, Shakespeare and Ellis had been standing outside a hair salon in Aston during the early hours of the morning, following a party.

Four men – Michael Gregory, Rodrigo Simms, Marcus Ellis (the half brother of Charlene Ellis), and Nathan Martin - were all found guilty of the murders at Leicester Crown Court in March 2005. Gregory, Ellis and Martin, who had fired the fatal shots, received life sentences with a recommended minimum of 35 years. Simms, who was only 18 at the time of the murder and had not fired any of the fatal shots, received a recommended minimum of 27 years as he had played a lesser part in the killings and was the only member of the gang aged under 21.
