[edit] Main player characters

[edit] Warriors of Light

The Warriors of Light (光の戦士?) ('The Light Warriors in the original NES release) are four characters whose identities are imagined entirely by the player. Their class is also determined by the player, who has an option of:

  • Warrior (戦士 Senshi?) (Fighter in the original release)
  • Thief (シーフ Shīfu?)
  • Monk (モンク Monku?) {Black Belt in the original release)
  • Red Mage (赤魔術士 Aka Majutsushi?)
  • White Mage (白魔術士 Shiro Majutsushi ?)
  • Black Mage (黒魔術士 Kuro Majutsushi?)

Midway through the game, Bahamut, King of the Dragons of the Cardian Islands, rewards the Warriors of Light for proving their courage after delivering the Rat Tail found in the Citadel of Trials. He transforms the Warriors as follows:

  • Warrior becomes Knight
  • Thief becomes Ninja
  • Monk becomes Master
  • Red Mage becomes Red Wizard
  • White Mage becomes White Wizard
  • Black Mage becomes Black Wizard

With this transformation, the Warriors of Light gain the ability to learn new spells and use different weapons and armor.

[edit] Four Fiends

The Lich, Fiend of Earth, became active near the game's beginning, and is responsible for the recent rotting of the land near Melmond and the "Devil's Tail". He is found in the Cavern of Earth. To reach him, the Warriors of Light must enter the Cavern twice. During the first trip, the Warriors defeat the Vampire (HP of 156) and obtain the Star Ruby. The Ruby is fed to the Giant (Titan) blocking the passage through the Giant's Cave, leading to the Sage's Cave. The sage Sarda (Sadda) gives the Warriors of Light the Earth Rod to lift the Stone Plate blocking the way to the lich. The lich reappears at the end of the game as a boss in the Chaos Shrine.
Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990 lists his HP as 400. The first time the party battles him in the GBA version, his HP is listed as 1200. The second time the party battles him in the GBA version, his HP is listed as 2800.

Marlith (Kary in the original release), the Fiend of Fire, becomes active at the lich's defeat (200 years earlier than intended), and resides in the volcano Mount Gulg. She can only be reached using the Canoe, received by the Warriors of Light from the Twelve Sages of Crescent Lake. Marilith reappears at the end of the game as a boss in the Chaos Shrine.

Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990, lists her HP as 600. The first time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 1440. The second time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 3200.

The Kraken, Fiend of Water, became active 200 years before the game begins, and resides in the lowest level of the Sea Shrine. The Sea Shrine is located in Onrac and reached by use of the Submarine built by a local to save the mermaids trapped within the Shrine when it sank beneath the Western Sea. The Warriors of Light must first procure the Oxyale from the Fairy of the Spring in Gaia before they may enter the Submarine. The Kraken reappears at the end of the game as a boss in the Chaos Shrine.

Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990, lists Kraken's HP as 800. The first time the party battles him in the GBA version, his HP is listed as 1800. The second time the party battles him in the GBA version, his HP is listed as 3600.

Tiamat, the Wind Fiend, became active 400 years before the game begins, and can be found in the Sky Castle, which can only be entered using the transporter within the Mirage Tower in the Great Eastern Desert. The Mirage Tower cannot be entered without the Chime given to the Warriors of Light by the Lufenish (Lefeinish). The transporter itself will not operate without the Warp Cube found within the Waterfall Cavern north of Onrac. Tiamat reappears at the end of the game as a boss in the Chaos Shrine.

Nintendo Power Strategy Guide Vol. 17 1990, lists Tiamat's HP as 1000. The first time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 2400. The second time the party battles her in the GBA version, her HP is listed as 5500.

[edit] Bikke

Bikke is a pirate who terrorized the port town of Pravoca. The Warriors of Light challenge him and defeat his pirate crew. This prompts Bikke to quickly turn a new leaf, offering the Warriors his ship as recompense.

[edit] Astos

Astos (アストス Asutosu?) is the king of the Dark Elves, residing in the Western Keep north of Elfheim. He disgises himself as a true elf king, tasking the Warriors of Light to retrieve the Crown from the Marsh Cave. Upon receiving the Crown, he reveals his true form, along with unveiling that he stole Matoya's crystal eye. The Warriors defeat him, taking back the crystal eye. With it returned, Matoya was able to make a Jolt Tonic to waken the true elf prince, who had been placed under a sleep-inducing spell by Astos years before.
In the Game Boy Advance version, Astos (and the Vampire from the Cavern of Earth) can be met and fought in spirit form in a random floor of the Whisperwind Cove.
